Spooky Songs and Rhymes!

These are just some of the spooky Halloween songs we started singing around our house last year, and I’ve been doing with the kids at pre-school. I know your kids have been learning some, too. Make sure you ask about them so you can sing along, or borrow these.

(MJ and Ellie fight over who will sing which one of these stanzas in the backseat of the car. If you’re out of the car, it’s a great one for gross motor movement! And it introduces minor tonality.)

“Fly Little Bat”

Fly, fly, fly little bat.

Fly, fly, fly little bat.

Fly, fly, fly little bat.
Halloween is here.
Creep, creep, creep little cat…

Stomp, stomp, stomp little monster…

Crawl, crawl, crawl little spider…

Dance, dance, dance little skeleton…

Float, float, float little ghost…

(The next one is good for counting/ pre-math. Use it for intentional touch of   fingers/ toes – remember, physical connections on the outside make brain connections on the inside! Have extra fun with it: run, turn the light off, and roll around on the floor!)
“Five Little Pumpkins”
5 Little Pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The 1st one said, “Oh my, It’s getting late.”
The 2nd one said, “There are witches in the air.”
The 3rd one said, “But we don’t care.”
The 4th one said, “Let’s run and run and run.”
The 5th one said, “I’m ready for some fun!”
“Oo-ooh” went the wind and out went the light,
And 5 little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
Here’s a simple one you could even have fun doing with your babies and toddlers!
Pumpkin, pumpkin, round and fat,
Turn into a Jack-o-lantern just like that!”
(MJ came home last year reciting this story, and I love it! It’s so catchy, dramatic, and it’s great for exercising verbal memory skills, a crucial pre-reading skill. You can almost see their little brains visualizing, their pre-frontal lobes at work. Fun to do with flashlights in a “dark, dark room”!)
Dark, Dark, Wood”
In a dark, dark wood there was a dark, dark house.
And in that dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room.
And in that dark, dark room there was a dark, dark cupboard.
And in that dark, dark cupboard there was a dark, dark shelf.
And on that dark, dark shelf there was a dark, dark box.
And in that dark, dark box there was a….GHOST!
