What Makes a Great Dad? 10 Tips for Fatherhood…

What makes a great Dad? Follow these steps to be like our great Daddy Dustin!

  1. A great dad shares his passions with his children. You cook with us, watch Julia Child videos with us, read Hardy Boys books to us, teach us how to play chess, ride bikes with us, play us your favorite music in the car – Chopin, Beatles, Sousa, blues…the things that you love are also becoming things that we love to do with you!
  2. A great dad gets involved in the interests and passions of his kids. Even though it might not be your thing, you play babies with Ellie, you watch Wild Kratts with MJ and/or listen to him re-tell an entire episode, you play Candy Land and Hide and Seek.
  3. A great dad allows his aging body to be used as a human trampoline…You come home from a long day in the OR, and let us do “rough and tumble” play with you on the floor! You let us climb on you and jump on you and splash you in the pool!
  4. A great dad reads to his kids…we especially love it when you read Dr. Seuss books to us, and even quote him by memory, like when you are getting us to try new foods: “You may like it, you will see…you may like it in a tree!
  5. A great dad shares LOTS of affection. Thank you for snuggling with us, sleeping with us, doing family hugs and naps.
  6. A great dad makes up silly games…like when you “Tuck in” Ellie by tossing her onto the bed, become Tickle Monster, or Daddy-Constrictor…
  7. A great dad takes us on adventures, near and far…With the right mindset, anything can be an adventure with Daddy! The grocery store, the farmer’s market, the zoo, the park, a camping trip, Home Depot, the beach, a trip  to Sonic on the bike…
  8. A great dad makes the most of quiet SLOW moments with us, too….sitting on the back porch, resting in a hammock, snuggling on the couch…
  9. A great dad puts family first…When you are not working, you are so good at putting us first. When you have spare energy and time, it belongs to us….this makes us feel so loved and important! AND we can tell you love spending time with us…the feeling is mutual.
  10. A great dad shares his feelings and helps us to handle our own…you let us know when you are sad, when you are proud, tired, frustrated. You apologize when you are sorry, you help us when we are fussy, and you offer us unconditional love.
